Registration Now Open for Latvian School Cup at the World Championships!
25 August 2023With the approaching new academic year, Rimi Riga Marathon, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Science and Riga City Council, has honored Latvia’s most active schools – winners of the Latvian School Cup. Additionally, we have announced the registration for the Autumn School Cup within the framework of the World Athletics Road Running Championships in Riga.
The Latvian School Cup, which took place for the 16th time during the Rimi Riga Marathon in May, brought together nearly 2300 students from the most active schools in Latvia. This year, it will be a novelty in the World Road Running Championships, providing students the opportunity to run alongside world running stars in distances of both a mile and 5 kilometers.
Participation in the championships, offering every running enthusiast the chance to earn a genuine World Championships medal, will be available to students for a symbolic fee, thanks to the support from the Latvian Sports Federation Council.
The tradition of schools and students competing among themselves was established in 2008 in cooperation with Riga City Council, inviting Riga students to compete for the Riga School Cup. Since 2016, with the support of the Latvian Sports Federation Council, students from all over Latvia have been invited to participate in the cup competition, expanding beyond just Riga.
It is crucial to lay the foundation of a healthy lifestyle and a joy for physical activity from school years, ensuring that these habits continue into adulthood, contributing to the formation of a healthy society. Gratitude goes to every active and dynamic teacher who cares for the physical preparedness of the new generation and sets an example for why and how to stay active on a daily basis. Thanks also to teachers from distant regions of Latvia who organize participation in the "Latvian School Cup" and allow children to experience the joy of movement in Latvia's biggest running celebration. I wish the students a successful and active new academic year, as well as achievements in the Latvian School Cup at the World Athletics Road Running Championships in Riga on October 1st!

This marks the 16th year since we introduced the School Cup within the Rimi Riga Marathon, allowing students to participate in the marathon for a symbolic entry fee and increasing the participant count to up to 2500 students from across Latvia. This is an entire generation that has grown up, participating at least once a year in Latvia's largest running festival. We are delighted that this year, as Riga is proclaimed the capital of world running, we are giving students the opportunity to participate twice in the Latvian School Cup and, for the first time, also in the World Athletics Road Running Championships, running on the same track as the world's fastest runners!

APPLY FOR THE "LATVIAN SCHOOL CUP 2023" AT THE WORLD CHAMPS'!
Participation in the World Champs’ “Latvian School Cup” will be available to students for a symbolic fee (2 euros), thanks to the support of the Latvian Sports Federation Council. Schools are invited to register for the World Championships Road Mile and 5 km distances.
The deadline for school team applications is September 15th.
