This year’s official running shirts designed by Paulis Liepa

16 March 2023

Continuing our annual tradition, an iconic graphic work of Paulis Liepa will appear on the official running shirt of the Rimi Riga Marathon.

Paulis Liepa, whose design of the official Rimi Riga Marathon running shirt was just unveiled at the shopping center Spice, is the best-known Latvian graphic artist with his own vibrant signature look and a modernist-based aesthetic. According to art critics, it stands out considerably against the backdrop of mainstream art. He exposes his works to direct scratches, scratched pieces of cardboard, and layers of paint over each other, creating the sense that his artworks have come from the 1960s or 1970s, were somewhere abandoned and forgotten, and are rediscovered today.

Among the most prominent graphic artists from Latvia, Paulis Liepa uses a wide range of graphic methods and has a distinctive handwriting that is both distinctive and lively.

According to art experts and critics, Pauis Liepa’s works stand out substantially from the background of popular art because of their sign language, which visually echoes the work of constructivist Gustav Klutsis, and aesthetics based on modernism.

The marathon route zigzags across the city of Riga like an ant trail, taking thousands of runners back and forth across the river through a maze of squares, parks, and boulevards. For a few days, the typical urban block mosaic has completely distinct signals, and the sweat-stained miles provide brand-new difficulties for both marathon runners and the city as a whole.
