As we reported at the end of last year, the Rimi Riga marathon will be the culmination of the 2021 running season at the end of the summer – on August 28th and 29th, 2021.
The Rimi Riga marathon running season 2021 will expand to the whole year for the first time, with new virtual, hybrid and in-person running events taking place in an attempt to fill the public sporting vacuum left by the pandemic. The culmination of the 2021 season—the 31st Rimi Riga Marathon—with the usual Kids’ Day, five and ten kilometer, half marathon and marathon distances will be organized for the first time at the end of the summer: on August 28th and 29th. Meanwhile, on May 15th-16th, when the Rimi Riga Marathon was initially planned, Riga will experience a new hybrid running event which, despite taking place on different courses throughout the city, might be having different start and finish arrangements, and will be unique for its other unusual characteristics to befit a running event of the future.
Finally, in spite of the restrictions, the Rimi Riga Marathon’s virtual Running Club will remotely motivate tens of thousands more people from Latvia, the Baltics and worldwide with its races and challenges all year.
Since June, when the Rimi Riga Marathon was one of the first in Europe to launch a virtual running club, more than 20,000 participants have taken part in 40 different remote challenges and races. In the virtual Running Club—the only and most meaningful format for motivating the public to move and stay active all year in a time when in-person races and even group training sessions are impossible—any enthusiast is welcome to register for free and feel the joy of running by racing or simply collecting kilometers and winning prizes from our sponsors.
Sporting event organisers and participants worldwide have adapted the race format; both World Marathon Majors and the World Athletics Half-Marathon Championships in Gdynia, as well as other endurance races such as IRONMAN, have introduced virtual race platforms.
We hope that, over the course of the 2021 season, we will be able to grow the number of virtual running race participants, attracting several tens of thousands of runners to exercise at least remotely. For example, the Winter Champs will “gather” almost 2,000 participants this week, while the mass-format virtual matches, including international virtual races, are still ahead of us. Organisers invite those interested to carefully keep up with the new season’s virtual race calendar and register for the events for free.
The first Rimi Riga Marathon at the end of summer, with a new hybrid event in May
The most important in-person events of the 2021 season will be the Rimi Riga Marathon, taking place at the end of the summer for the first time on August 28th-29th, and a new-format hybrid running event planned for the previously-publicised Rimi Riga Marathon dates, May 15th and 16th.
“Even taking into account the most optimistic world recovery predictions, the state of emergency does not allow us to prepare for the marathon in May with enough certainty for everyone—participants, international guests, World Athletics, the city, government and epidemiologists—to be happy. Therefore, we have made the decision to move the 2021 Rimi Riga Marathon to the end of the summer, August 28th-29th. Meanwhile, the usual marathon dates will be used to organise a futuristic hybrid running event in the city,” comments Aigars Nords, Director of the Rimi Riga Marathon.
“Although we have successfully padded out the 2021 running season with remote ‘mass’ running events in our virtual Running Club, we recognise how much our runners miss the atmosphere of in-person races and events. That’s why we will treat running society with two significant in-person events for the upcoming season,” adds Nords, explaining the necessity for a hybrid event in May.
May’s in-person races will offer a certified course and official timekeeping, but without the usual mass start, finish and other elements of traditional mass running events. The schedule of events for May 15th and 16th is still being planned, but organisers hope that even in its hybrid format, the new Rimi Riga Marathon event will open the floodgates for the summer running season just like the “big” marathon usually does.
Participants registered for the Rimi Riga Marathon in May 2021 will be automatically transferred to the 2021 Rimi Riga Marathon on the 28th and 29th of August. Meanwhile, registration for the Rimi Riga Marathon hybrid event on the 15th and 16th of May, as well as the 2021 Rimi Riga Marathon on August 28th and 29th, will be launched in the spring, as soon as potential restrictions become clearer.
